Preserve the Heart of Montgomery: Protect the Kenvue Site and the Sourlands
Our mission is rooted in a deep love for Montgomery Township—especially the Kenvue site and the surrounding areas that define the rural character and natural beauty of our community. Fairview Road, Grandview Road, Hollow Road, and the nearby creek are not just points on a map—they are peaceful, wooded neighborhoods where birdsong greets the morning and the rhythm of nature sets the pace of life.
Nestled at the edge of the majestic Sourland Mountains, this area is a sanctuary. It is home to rich wildlife, quiet forest trails, and some of the last remaining undeveloped lands in the township. We believe this landscape is worth protecting—not just for ourselves, but for future generations who deserve the chance to grow up with clean air, open skies, and a tangible connection to nature.
We are deeply concerned about the proposed redevelopment of the Kenvue site, which includes high-density affordable housing units and threatens sensitive wetlands along Fairview Road. These wetlands support an extraordinary range of biodiversity—tree frogs, foxes, large woodpeckers, migratory birds, and even bald eagles. Paving over this habitat would permanently upset the ecosystem and drive away the very wildlife that gives this place its vibrancy and life.
In addition to the environmental cost, the site lacks the basic infrastructure needed for large-scale development. There is no public sewer or water system serving the area, and no sidewalks to support safe pedestrian access. Fairview Road’s dangerous “S-curve” and one-lane bridge were never designed to handle the traffic volume that hundreds of new homes would bring. These are not minor inconveniences—they are major safety hazards that endanger residents, school buses, emergency vehicles, and cyclists alike.
Importantly, the State of New Jersey has designated this site as a rural area, clearly signaling that it is not intended for high-density development. And yet, Montgomery Township has included it in its affordable housing plan—against the spirit of responsible planning and against the interests of those who live here.
Let us also not forget the cultural significance of this site. The I.M. Pei–designed building on the Kenvue campus is a rare architectural gem—a symbol of thoughtful design and innovation. Demolishing this landmark for cookie-cutter construction would erase an important piece of Montgomery’s identity.
The charm of our neighborhood lies in its tranquility, its rootedness in the land, and its harmony with the Sourlands. We cannot allow short-term mandates or misguided planning decisions to erase what generations have worked to protect.
Let us stand together to defend the land, the wildlife, and the soul of Montgomery. Say no to irresponsible development at the Kenvue site. Say yes to a future that values environmental stewardship, rural heritage, and the quiet dignity of our community.
